The Nigerian poultry industry comprises about 180+ Million birds. Of these, 80+ Million chickens are raised in extensive systems, 60+ Million in semi-intensive, and the remaining 40+ Million in intensive systems.
Poultry production in Nigeria amounts up to 300 Mt of meat and 650 Mt eggs per year. In the LIFE-ND project, all the 6 (IFAD Funded) states practice poultry as an enterprise. The project has impacted the lives of its beneficiaries in Poultry production and processing services.
Mrs. Mercy Ozakpolor, is a 35 year old, mother of 3 and an Indigene of Oza-nogogo community in Ika South LGA, Delta State. She was an incubatee of LIFE-ND mentored by an incubator, now a proud poultry farmer. With IFAD interventions, Mrs. Mercy Ozakpolor was given a working capital of 1,012,616 naira, which she was able to use to purchase DOC (Day old chicks), feeds and other relevant materials through her Incubator.
Mrs. Ozakpolor made over ₦875,440 in her first production cycle even though most of the birds given to her were lost to a disease outbreak. She is relentless and continues with the goal of becoming a big poultry marketer in her community and delta as a whole.
